Meet more mums-to-be at your antenatal class
The birth of a child, especially your first, can be both an exciting and nerve-wracking experience, one that is greatly aided by the support of other prospective parents going through the same situation as you. Antenatal classes provide you with the perfect opportunity to meet and get to know more mums-to-be, as you journey together to learn everything that you need to know. With government legislation allowing for time off to attend these classes before the birth of your child, there is lots to learn and experience and no excuse not to bother.
Antenatal classes vary depending on the area and organisation running them, so be sure to read up on those classes within your area to find one that suits you best. Some expect both the mother and father to be present, while others are aimed just at the mother. Others allow for more flexibility in that the pregnant woman can have her mother or a close friend with her within the classes. Your midwife will be able to advise you as to the best group for you to attend, and likewise research conducted by yourself can help you to find the ideal lesson plan covering the specific content that you are concerned about.
The question on the minds of many first time mums is often, “what exactly ARE antenatal classes?” Often the first contact we have with this vital experience are clips from TV shows that don’t give a lot away as to their relevance or content. So let’s answer that question to consider a few of the topics that will be covered in detail.
Each class is different so check the syllabus before signing up, but there are certainly a set of common topics that you are likely to see whether you take London classes or lessons in any other part of the country. You’ll be given an insight into the process of labour and the birth of your baby, including how to manage any pain you might feel and the options available. Everything regarding the period of pregnancy is likely to be covered, such as the best exercises that you can do to stay healthy; vitally important for both you and your baby.
With the birth out of the way, your lessons will progress into dealing with how you are to care for a new born baby, providing you with the knowledge that you need to be a great parent. There’ll be information for your own benefit too, such as how to relax and how to maintain your own health with exercise such as yoga
All of this vital information that could help to put your mind at ease is available to you through antenatal classes. But more than that, the priceless opportunity to meet other mums-to-be is not one that should be turned down. Chatting to them will help to put your mind at ease and will develop useful friendships for the future. Chat to your midwife now about antenatal classes to see just how much they could help you through your pregnancy.
